TECHNICAL

This is another in a series of my international scans using voice over internet protocol (VoIP). The subject of this scan is every 9999 number in Inner-London. The country code for the UK is 44. The area code for the London area is 020, 0 being the trunk code (similar to 1 prefixes NPAs in the United States and not required when dialing internationally). Prefixes are four digits (Inner London is covered by a range of 7000-7999). Prefixes are followed by a 4 digit subscriber number. This scan was made using a US-Robotics 56K external modem (great for the speaker, I really recommend it if you scan) and a laptop running Toneloc v1.10. I have S11=1 and S6=0 set in the modem init string for much faster dialing. The MP3 recordings were made using a Radio Shack pickup coil (part 44-533) a Radio Shack mini-amp (part 277-1008) with Cool Edit. The MP3s are encoded in 10Kbps in Mono to enhance file compression.

SUMMARY

There are a lot of interesting things about this scan. The most obvious is that in all likelihood nobody has ever done this on the record before. Local calls in the UK have connection fees, unlike the US. Just now are free calls starting to be seen under BT with their VoIP plans. I personally loved dialing London (in addition to Sydney), because 1,000 prefixes in a row are registered and active. It's really easy to scan. I'm still trying to figure out how to do a 9999 scan for a whole NPA in the US! It's very difficult to configure Toneloc or even THC-Scan to block out inactive exchanges. More interesting are the number of test recordings and little secrets hidden on 9999's in London.

One thing I found very strange were the amount of numbers directing to 000 (similar to 911 in the US) emergency services. I tried to record as many as I could, but it took a while before I realized what I was actually hearing. Another strange thing were the "car service" numbers. All I can figure is that these are numbers for cab services in London from some Googling. Some of the numbers weren't listed, yet they all answered "Car Service." Maybe that's normal in London? I wouldn't know.

Anyway, I only listed a few car-service numbers because there were SO many of them on 9999 numbers. You'll find a few things about the structure of this scan. I've separated the numbers into five sections, due to the diversity of recordings. The sections are as follows: TEST RECORDINGS, TONES & GENERAL STRANGENESS, ERRORS, CONFERENCES, and TONELOC BULK. Test recordings are numbers with recordings from telephone companies with announcements regarding the nature of the number or switch. These can be pretty interesting--take a look at 7425-9999. By the way ASU stands for "Advanced Service Unit" apparently.

Tones and general strangeness are exactly that,tones and general strangeness. I have an issue with listing things more than twice, so you may find that although there are a lot of designated silent numbers in the Toneloc Bulk section, I have not listed them all above. The same goes for some of the ASU recordings. Errors are error recordings. Conferences are numbers that I found a few of with telephone conference options. I don't know anybody else in London, I don't know if or how they work, but I recommend testing them out with a friend. I know nobody else who can call UK at the moment. And of course Toneloc Bulk are the recorded comments (push K during call) that I made throughout the scan. They're generally unsorted and they are not comprehensive of every number with a ring or voicemail, but you will find good stuff if you sort through, like all the silent numbers (potential loops.)

These numbers are recorded in international dial format, because of Toneloc, so you can dial these numbers AS they are listed below from the US and you will reach the number. No worries about trunk codes or anything. 011 is the international access code. 44 is the country code. Finally if you see anything interesting on here, try a 999X or 99XX from the area and see what you find. Some of the numbers in Toneloc Bulk listed as "couldn't be connected" or "busy" may actually be test numbers accessible only from London!
